The film's releasing on February 15th worldwide. I am eagerly looking forward to this film, as it is directed by one of my favorite directors: Ashutosh Gowariker.

Superb movie! I totally loved it! It is really well made, well directed, well shot, well edited, etc. In this sense, it reminded me of Khosla Ka Ghosla, another "new director" product which also was excellently directed and caught my attention for this reason! More importantly, Johnny Gaddaar is a film that tells the story in a great fashion through a very focused screenplay; as the film progressed, the thrill got more and more! I totally loved it. Liked it even more that Raghavan's previous movie Ek Hasina Thi! I also loved how they used that old style background music in this movie, mixed with some original background music.
The performances, wow. I must say the performances by Dharam-ji, Vinay Pathak (love this guy), Zakir Hussain and Govind Namdeo (loved his dialogues!) were absolutely great. Neil Nitin Mukesh gives a good debut; his acting quality was sufficient, but not impressing. You know, there is something about the expressions in his eyes from which you can observe that he has yet to get used to the camera. You know, a certain awareness of the camera can be seen in his eyes. Koi baat nahin, I think he'll improve by doing more (hopefully great) movies. It is commendable that he chooses this kind of a film as his debut! Rimi Sen and Vinay Pathak's wife were very good as well! I think I have seen the woman that plays Pathak's wife in one of those melodramatic tv-serials. |

I saw the film in its original DVD version, and I somewhat liked it. Most probably because I expected a highly dramatic movie with an illogical script, and that's exactly what I got. It was great to see Rani and Konkona (and Jaya) together in one movie, and they all gave some nice performances. I loved the cinematography as well.
What I particularly did not like was the way it ending abruptly. I liked the fact that Rani's character was given a chance to lead a "normal" life and get married, but the way it was done made me feel that the filmmakers did not give it much thought, and just ended it. I especially liked the sequence in the climax where Jaya, Rani and Konkana are in the room after Rani says that Abhishek proposed to her, and Konkona stands up for her sister in front of her mother who asks her why she came to Konkona's wedding in the first place. But after that, Abhishek knowing everything and everyone living happily ever after.. it just seemed too convenient a way to end the film. Also, Anupam Kher was absolutely wasted in a role that was not developed. The film contained two typical Hindi film villains, which was boring to see as well. Actually, apart from the three ladies, none of the other roles were developed! Well, as I'm writing this, I realize that even their roles were not developed properly but they did very well with what was given to them. |
